AC (“Boon”) Boonzaier proposed the formation of the South African Society for Surgery of the Hand (SASSH) at the Orthopaedic Congress in Johannesburg in 1963. This was seconded by G T du Toit. The first meeting of the proposed Hand Society took place in Johannesburg on 4 April 1964 under auspices of the South African Orthopaedic Association (SAOA) and presided over by the President W T Ross and Secretary J Craig. The first Draft Constitution was presented at a meeting held on 20 Nov 1964 at the SA Blood Transfusion Lecture Hall in Johannesburg. This Constitution was debated and changed over the next 5 years and finally adopted by the Medical Association of South Africa (MASA) on 6 Feb 1969 and accepted by SASSH at its inaugural meeting on 11 July 1969 at Pretoria. Early visits by eminent Hand Surgeons included Guy Pulvertaft (UK) (1960), Dan Riordan (USA) (1966), Willie White (USA) (1969).

Dan Riordan also known as “Dan the Hand Man” was instrumental in encouragement and advise to form the SASSH and then to join the International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand (IFSSH) as member.

Dr D A van Staden, GP from Rustenburg was accepted by SASSH as the first associate member on 6 Nov 1971. He presented a paper during the 1971 Congress. The first prize awarded by SASSH was made to Dr Van Staden for his contribution entitled “Important principles in treatment of extensive hand injuries”. The prize was the textbook by Zoncolli, on the functional anatomy of the hand

SASSH was officially elected to IFSSH on 2 Oct 1972 bringing the total membership of countries to 9. (American, British, German, French, Japanese, Scandinavian, Brazilian, Italian and South African Societies). Drs. Raoul Tubiana (France) and Arthur Barsky (USA) acted as sponsors.

SASSH was formally recognized by the WCA Commissioner as the official body to advise him on matters of hand injuries.

During early 1972 Dr A C Boonzaier actively campained and wrote to all Directors of Hospital Services and Heads of some Orthopaedic and Plastic Surgery Departments to establish Hand Surgery posts to deal exclusively with hand surgery.

True to his mission, he established the first Hand Clinic in South Africa at the Baragwanath Hospital outside Johannesburg. He was later appointed Reconstructive Hand Surgeon to the Wesfort Lepraserium near Pretoria which was the first hand surgery appointment in South Africa.

A Combined International Meeting between the South African, American, German and other Societies for Surgery of the Hand was planned for 22 – 26 March 1993 in Cape Town. However, first the American Delegation, followed by the German Delegation withdrew their support rendering the organized meeting impractical and was thus cancelled only a few weeks before the scheduled time. For this reason no Refresher Course, Instructional Course or Visiting Lecturer could be arranged in time for 1993. Instead only an one day Annual Congress was held.

Dr Paul Brand, who was one of the invited speakers, did not cancel his booking and presented his contribution at some centres on Bio- mechanics of the Hand with Special Reference to Tendon Transfers in the Hand.

Dr RM McFarlane led another IFSSH delegation from 15 – 17 May 1993 to Latvia, Russia, Ukraine and Czech Republic which included some of our members (E Bowen-Jones, J Youngleson and U Mennen)

This year marks the 25th year celebration of SASSH.

The invited guest speaker to the Refresher Course, Prof R Marcove, NY, USA, withdrew his visit to South Africa days before the start of the fully organized and finalized course. All efforts to rescue the meeting failed and the organizers had no choice but to inform over 100 registrants less than 48 hours before commencement of the cancelled course. This was a major disappointment caused again by an overseas colleague, especially so soon after a similar experience one year before.

The second upgraded and expanded edition of “The Hand Book” was published. (1994)

A book on “The History of the South African Society for Surgery of the Hand 1969 – 1994” was published. (Ed.: Mennen U) Commemorative T-shirts (Designer: Dagmar Erken) and key-holders were issued to congress registrants.
